Short Term Accommodation (STA)

Short Term Accommodation, or STA, is a funding program designed to provide support and accommodation for individuals requiring a temporary break from their usual living arrangements. STA encompasses various aspects, including personal care, meals, and engaging activities, all collaboratively agreed upon by the individual and the service provider. This resource allows individuals the opportunity to explore new experiences, form connections with new acquaintances, and develop fresh skills. STA funding typically comes into play when an individual’s regular support network is unavailable. STA can serve as respite, offering the primary caregivers a much-needed break from their caregiving responsibilities.

NDIS Coverage and Flexibility

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) generally funds up to 28 days of STA per year, and this funding can be used flexibly. For example, an individual may choose to utilize it in blocks of up to 14 days at a time or allocate it for a weekend getaway each month. STA is usually group-funded, meaning that supports are shared with others, unless there is documented evidence indicating a need for individualized support tailored to one’s specific disability.

Funding Source and Category

The NDIS funds Short Term Accommodation under the Core Support category known as ‘Assistance with Daily Living’ (Category 1). This means that the funding is intended to support individuals in their daily activities and enhance their overall quality of life.

Distinguishing STA from a Holiday

It’s important to differentiate STA from a traditional holiday. The NDIS will only fund STA if it aligns with the individual’s disability support needs, such as providing respite, helping the individual work towards their personal goals, facilitating community participation, and representing value for money over time. Additionally, the NDIS considers whether the individual’s informal support network is capable of sustaining them in the long term and explores alternative means of supporting them.

Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) Funding

The NDIS also offers Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) funding, based on an individual’s specific support requirements. This funding may be considered in cases where:

  1. Family or informal supports can provide long-term support.
  2. The individual’s anticipated future support needs may be reduced.
  3. MTA can help maintain functional capacity, enhance independence, or increase participation in activities.

Instances When STA is Not Funded

STA funding is not applicable in the following scenarios:

  1. Longer-term accommodation costs that are generally expected to be covered by individuals on a day-to-day basis.
  2. Accommodation for reasons unrelated to disability support needs, such as waiting for home modifications.
  3. Housing crisis situations, which have separate support options available, like Homelessness Australia. If carers suddenly become unavailable or there are concerns about an individual’s safety in their current living situation, it is advisable to contact the Planner or Local Area Coordinator to identify the most suitable solution.

Securing STA in Your NDIS Plan

While STA funding may not be automatically included in your NDIS plan, individuals can choose to allocate funds from their Core budget to cover STA if it aligns with their goals. If circumstances change or if the current plan lacks the necessary STA support, individuals have the option to request a plan adjustment. This can be discussed with the Planner or Local Area Coordinator to ensure that your NDIS plan aligns with your evolving needs.
